Bacteriostatic Water is a preserved aqueous reconstitution solution formulated with deionized water and 0.9% benzyl alcohol. The addition of benzyl alcohol distinguishes bacteriostatic water from unpreserved water solutions. At a concentration of 0.9%, equivalent to 9 mg/mL, benzyl alcohol functions as an antimicrobial preservative that helps inhibit bacterial growth following repeated vial access.
Because preservatives may interact with certain peptides, proteins, or experimental compounds, researchers should evaluate compatibility, concentration, pH, storage conditions, and stability requirements before selecting a reconstitution solution.
Mechanism of Action
Bacteriostatic water does not contain an active peptide or pharmacologically active research compound. Its primary function is to provide a preserved aqueous vehicle for laboratory reconstitution and dilution.
Deionized water serves as the solvent and reconstitution medium. The deionization process removes many dissolved ionic contaminants, including mineral salts and charged impurities, to produce water suitable for controlled laboratory applications.
Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol commonly used as an antimicrobial preservative in multi-use formulations. Research indicates that benzyl alcohol can disrupt microbial cell membrane structure and function, helping limit bacterial proliferation within the solution.
